The Hardest Thing To Say

by R.T. Allenson

The call ended without anything of note.

He felt his heart sink in his chest and emotions choked him to the point that he thought he would cry. The noisome shadows that played at his mind earlier were nothing now, nothing at all but a calmness and silence that would last forever – or at least until the night.

Words left unsaid all sinking into the wretched abyss of unfeeling; of course he knew he was right but to wound him so left him drained and broken, and even till now the hardest thing to say is still sorry.

“I’m sorry.” he whispers to himself as he buries his head into his pillow, murmuring until the tears start flowing again.
